Draped Shirt - Spring 2025

Project Objective: Design, drape, and sew a garment utilizing design techniques found online and in store.

Online Designer Research: Maison Chloé

In Store Research: Aritzia and Yedina

To begin this project, a renowned designer was chosen to spark inspiration. In this case, Maison Chloé was picked as the brand’s key design aesthetics are very romantic and textural which translate well to draping techniques.

Please note that the images in the “key design aesthetics” all belong to Maison Chloé.

It was also important to consider design choices found in stores and to see how their price point was reflected in finishing techniques. Overall, a theme of textural and chiffon designs was found across both online and in store research, leading to choice to drape a chiffon and textural garment.

Design Process: Initial Draped Garment

After completing in store and online research, it was time to take the observations made and turn them into a physical garment. At first sketching was necessary for ideation but quickly moving into draping was key to better understand the garment’s construction. At the end, the garment was simply pinned to the dress form as a first iteration of the design.

Design Process: Final Draped Garment

After the first iteration of the garment was complete, it was time to refine design choices and consider finishing techniques. For example, by sampling with overlocking the flounces with the 3-thread overlocker, it was determined that that technique would overpower the chiffon which lead to changes in the overall design.
